The Nevada Inventor
A Community Resource
Newsletter of the Nevada Inventor's Association, a nonprofit organization
January 2002
Welcome to a work in progress
With a new year, a new editor and new officers, January seems to be a good time to make a few changes. President
Bill Torch and editor Connie Benedict met Jan. 18 to discuss the direction "The Nevada Inventor" should
be taking.
The conclusion was to invite member input at the Jan. 26 meeting so that changes reflect the group's needs.
Some of the areas where we are looking for ideas include:
• The mission statement of NIA
-What does it want to become
• in one year?
• in five years?
-How can it get "there" most effectively?
• A mission statement for "The Nevada Inventor"
-Is it primarily an internal communications tool?
-Should it become a membership marketing tool?
-What kinds of material should be included?
-What is its advertising policy?
Come to the meeting Sat., Jan. 26 with your ready-to discuss ideas.
Speaker offers Free Money
LeRoy Singleton has free money for inventors.
Singleton is Outreach Program Manager for the Small Business Innovative Research program of the Nevada Commission
on Economic Development under Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt. On Jan. 26, he will explain the program, its organization
and structure and how small businesses in Nevada can participate. This can mean opportunities for inventors who
consider themselves to have small businesses as well as those who are looking for opportunities for sponsorships.
The SBIR program was created by Congress in 1982. It requires any federal organization with a research and development
budget over $100 million must give 2.5 per cent to that area. Ten federal agencies are involved. Singleton declined
to list them, but added, "they can surprise you."
Is SBIR for you? How do you get involved? Join NIA at 9 a.m. Sat. Jan 26 at Washoe Medical Center, Room 102 to
find out.

Do you need to be more persistent?
Are you having trouble seeing your dream become a reality? Maybe you just need to be more persistent.
In The Chutzpah Connection, Reno author and speaker Idora Silver lists the following nine steps to persisting.Studies
of successful people consistently show that the number one trait they share is persistence— not intelligence, not
luck, but the ability to just keep on going.
1. Take the first step.
2. Take small steps.
3. Congratulate yourself at every step.
4. If you fall down, get up.
5. Let success fuel you.
6. If you are stuck somewhere and are losing your energy and enthusiasm, try it a different way.
7. Visualize the outcome and feel the pleasure of success.
8. Act as if you are successful.
9. Just do it The Chutzpah Connection is published by Chutzpress,3855 Piccadilly Dr., Reno, NV 89505. 1-800-682-2929.
Selling your dream
"Evangelism is the process of convincing people to believe in your product or idea as much as you do. It means
selling your dream by using fervor, zeal, guts and cunning....ln contrast with with old fashioned concept of closing
a deal, evangelism means showing others why they should dream your dream."
—Guy Kawasaki
Selling the Dream
Missing in Action Due to technical difficulties and a profound lack of time, the NIA logo is missing from this
issue. As soon as my scanner and my computer are once again speaking to each other, it will return.
The other element that's missing from this month's issue is its advertising. Part of our discussion on Saturday
will cover development of a written policy and setting realistic rates for balancing value to the advertisers with
the financial needs of the organization.
Advertising will return (assuming the majority of members agree) in the next issue.
Meet the Editor
Most NIA members are aware of the change in newsletter editors from Margaret Stewart to Connie Benedict and I want
to introduce myself.
I have a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's in education, with a lot of post graduate journalism classes
over the past l8 years—including the first desktop publishing class ever offered at UNR's Reynolds School of Journalism.
I also did independent consulting in business communications for quite a few years, as well as taking advantage
numerous professional development opportunities.
Recently I have begun working on my certification for nonprofit management at the university and am currently beginning
an individual study in grant writing at TMCC.
