NIA to Man Booth at State Fair
Volunteers Needed
Jerome Lemelson, one of the world's most successful and prolific inventors chose Incline Village, Nevada as his home. The inventor and philanthropist, along his wife Oorothy, founded the Lemelson Program ar the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as a sister program at UNR. Lemelson and his wide range of over 500 patented inventions, from technology that effects the bar code to Velcro darts, will be highlighted in NIA booth at the State Fair. In an effort to promote scientific thinking and creativity, the booth will publicize the excitement of these successful inventions and their Nevada inventor.
The booth itself is taking shape. Those who attended the June meeting know that Barbara Frank offered to donate a large banner and signs. Copies of patents were solicired to enlarge as background decorations. The Nevada Inventor of the year, not yet announced, will be publicized. Booth volunteers will promote NIA membership, offer the association's pool of speakers to community groups and classrooms, and display their own inventions. Enthusiasm is running high for this ambitious project. If you have time, an invention to discuss, and the willingness to promote the NIA as a community resource please come to the next meeting and get involved.

Barbara Frank Cautions Against Greed when Marketing 1st Invention
In a dynamic speech at the June NIA meeting, Barbara Frank, owner of Frankly First Printing and Promotional, cautioned 1 st time inventors against marketing their own creations in an effort to hold on to potential sales revenue. "Inventors are their own worst enemy when bringing a product to market. Marketing is the toughest part of the inventing process. You will be up against the big boys when competing for shelf space in major retailers. I've seen it get ugly." she suggests that inventors sell their 1st patent rights for a fair price and use the money gained to finance the marketing of their 2nd invention.
In addition to a discussion about the pitfalls of retail marketing, Ms. Frank said that the internet levels the playing field for owner marketing. "To reach your target market for your invention plan on spending a least $3,000 on a professionally designed web page that allow orders to be placed online. In addition, a least 6 hours a month need to be devoted to updating your web page search engine key words. This is key if your web page is to be mentioned in the top 3 suggested sites in popular search engines."
Robin Benjamin suggests hiring "sales team" when network selling
Robin Benjamin, owner of United Resource Group Intuitive Business Consultants and 2nd speaker at the June Meeting, put forth the novel idea of hiring your own sales team at a straight commission rate to sell your network sales - driven products, such as the products she promotes for FF2K, CleanseZyme, Way Less, and Miracle Boost.

The following is a copy of a letterfaxed on Nevada Inventors Association letterhead to Congressman Jim Gibbons.
June 23, 2000
The Honorable Jim Gibbons
Representative from Nevada
100 Cannon HOB
Washington, D.C. 20515
Re: Opposition to H.R. 4690
Dear Congressman Gibbons:
Regarding bill H.R. 4690, rhe appropriation of $295,000,000 of private fee money from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) is outrageous!! For the House Appropriations Committee to consider passing such a bill is unconscionable. These are private funds collected from fees - not tax money!
With so many questionable subsidies and spending programs already tainting the Congressional "Pork Barrel" mentality by the left hand, it makes greed of the right hands, such as H.R. 4690, even more despicable. With their work loads increasing annually, an already underfunded PTO could be crippled to the point of emergency.
Closer to home, the Patent and Trademark Depository Library at UNR already has had their needs curtailed because of Congressional appropriation of our fees.
To even further deprive Nevada small businesses and inventors of such basic research tools will strike ar rhe life blood of our, and the United States' economic foundation. The inventors and small businessmen of Nevada urge you, Congressman, to vigorously oppose this evil and hurtful tax on American innovation.
Respectfully,
Donald G. Costar,
Founder, Nevada Inventor's Association
